award changes
Posted by Steve - 06:20 PM 14.07.10
working as a casual patrolman in the security industry in Victoria for the past few years, we received four weeks holiday per year, we are now informed that as of 1st jan this no longer applies because of the new award. I thought pay and conditions were not supposed to change. What has changed.

Maternity leave
Posted by Maree - 01:49 PM 14.07.10
I work for a big company and have been temporarily promoted to a managers possition. They have given me a Diploma course to complete in 12months and have extended her original 12month leave to 18months. I have recently been informed that I must now sign a new contract that includes my normal possition description and a new award. This is the second 're-issued' contract I have had to sign. I apparently will be on the same wage (which is ridiculously low). My question is, do they have the right to force us onto a new contract with a different award (other staff have had their wages cut as a result) and if I am performing duties outside my possition discription such as committee responsibilities? I now face a very uncertain future with high responsibilities and a very low wage...

hours cut
Posted by Lisa - 08:18 PM 13.07.10
In october 2009 I was offered a casual part time position on the basis that I would be doing 24 hours a week , I accepted the job since then the company has employed another person on a permanent part time basis and my hours have been given to this person to the point where I am now only getting 6 hours a week, there has been no consultation and there has certainly been no problem with my standard of work quite the opposite I have just received a glowing reference from the manager. what are my rights?, who can I talk to ?, what should I do? is it legal for a company to do this

Staff meetings
Posted by L - 07:46 PM 12.07.10
Hi, in my new job we are required to attend Staff meetings almost every 2 weeks which are unpaid. I work in a shop, and in one of the meetings the staff were required to do product displays which I consider work. Also, the meetings usually go for several hours (around 2 or 3) and occur on weekends. Is this legal? What is the law regarding staff meetings?

I work in a hospital with direct contact with sick patients and cancer patients and am still on my 3 mth probation. I have had the flu on and off for the past 6 weeks since I have been there and have had some time off (about 4 days total). Will I lose my job because I am thinking of others and not wanting to get patients sicker?? I have joined the union as well, can they help me, and if I get fired, am I covered etc?

Charitable I dont think so
Posted by Sharron - 04:12 PM 10.07.10
I work for a very large so called charity. I have worked for this organisation for 6yrs. I was employed as a supervisor then this was changed to shop manager. We operate with wonderful volunteers. We have a paid business manager who is meant to oversee the general running of the business. I often find myself in roles that are not part of my job discription nor my responsibilty. The business manager fails in his duties. I do it because if I don't the things dont get done and I feel that management would think I cant do my job. An example of this recently is being told to contact an employment agency and find a new driver. I am then expected to filter through the potential job applicates contact him and attend interviews. I and other shop supervisors/managers are basicly doing his job for him while he does very little. I have never had any contact with our human resource team and wouldn't even no where to start. I cant complain to the business manager as he is the problem. I have no one else for support. How do I go about getting things sorted out.

Casual Roster
Posted by Thomas - 12:06 AM 10.07.10
Hi, I am a casual employee at an Ex-Servicemens Club and have a question regarding rostering. On our roster it has a start and finish time. If another employee tells us to work over our finish time do we get paid overtime? Even if this is under 5hrs?

Discrimination?
Posted by Lea - 11:46 PM 07.07.10
Hi, I was just wondering where I stand when it comes to equal pay. I am female and was promoted to my current position 4 and a half months ago, the firm have just employed a male in to the exact same role as me, he is youger than me by 4 years, has no previous experience and no relevant qualifications and I know he has been employed on a higher wage than I earn. As I am older, have experience and relevant industry qualifications should I expect to be paid at least the same as the new employee?

Redundancy
Posted by Rhonda - 10:03 AM 07.07.10
My daughter has been made redundant. She has been told that there are no suitable positions for her in the organisation. She believes there is, as a similar position has now been advertised for another centre. Should she have been given opportunity to redeploy to this position? As well the organisation has a process set down for redundancy where they say they will do certain things and work with the employee and they have not followed that process and have told her that this is ok as they do not have to follow the process. Does she have a case for a Fair Work claim? If she places a claim does she have any costs if after mediation she withdraws? Your advice would be appreciated. She has little time to decide what to do.
